c. Religious significance:
A myth states that a demon by the name of Dushan along with kings Ripudamna and Singhaditya once attacked the devotees of Lord Shiva residing in Ujjain. In response to this unwarranted attack on his devotees Shiva in turn transformed into his “Mahakal” avatar and destroyed the demon and the kings. The aftermath of this incident was that Lord Shiva then decided to reside in this temple so as to provide protection to his devotees. This temple was supposed to have been built by Lord Brahma.
