Mount Mary

In the “City of Dreams” there is a Roman Catholic Basilica known as “Mount Mary Church” located in Mumbai in Bandra. This church is also known as “The Basilica of Our Lady of Mount”. This basilica is located on top of a hill about 80 meters above sea level overlooking the Arabian Sea. The feast of Virgin Mary is celebrated with great fanfare every year on the first Sunday after 8th September. This feast includes a week long fair known as the “Bandra Fair”. The closest railway station to this temple is located in Bandra. The Bandra Terminus Railway Station is well connected to many of the major cities and towns in and around the state of Maharashtra.

2. By road:

The nearest airport to this famous temple is located in Santacruz/Vile Parle. This airport is called Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport and is well connected to major cities in the country while, the international airport is located in Sahar and is well connected to most of the major countries.

c. Religious significance:

This church which is dedicated to “Virgin Mary” was first built in 1640. It was then rebuilt in 1761. It was the Jesuit priests from Portugal during the 16th century that first brought the statue of Mother Mary to this church.  In 1700 Arab pirates were reported to have damaged this statue. In the year 1761 when this church was rebuilt this disfigured statue was substituted with the statue of “Our Lady of Navigator’s in St Andrew’s Church”. According to folklore this statue was found floating in the sea and, this was claimed by a fisherman i.e. koli to have appeared in his dreams.
