c. Religious significance:
This popular temple is devoted to “Mata Sheetla Devi” who was the wife of Guru Dronacharya, the renowned teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas. She was also known as Kripi/Kripai/Lalitha. According to legend Lalitha used to provide care and treatment to children suffering from small pox. It is due to this selflessness that people began to affectionately call her as “Mata”. It was after her demise that this temple was built in her honour and, she began to be known as “Mata Sitla or Mata Masani” which means “the goddess of small pox”. The temple as it stands today was built by a Jat King Jawahar Singh of Bharatpur state in honour of his victory over Delhi for which he had invoked Mata Sheetla Devi’s blessings.
