St John’s Church

A catholic shrine belonging to the “Protestant” sect known as “St John’s Church” is located in Himachal Pradesh. This church comprising of a stone structure is situated in Dalhousie. In addition, to its architectural beauty this church is also surrounded by lush green forests and pine valleys.  Furthermore, this church structurally is also said to bear resemblance to the Roman Catholic Church of England. It also comprises of beautiful glass paintings depicting saints such as St John and St Peter.

The climate is pleasant in Dalhousie especially during the summer with the temperature ranging from maximum of 35 degree Celsius to a minimum of 16 degree Celsius. So the ideal time to visit this church would be from March to May.

The nearest railway station to this church is located in Pathankot at a distance of 80 km. The Pathankot Railway Station is well connected to major cities such as New Delhi, Jaipur, Bhatinda, Ahmedabad, Jodhpur etc.

If you intend to drive to this church the ideal starting points would be New Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Amritsar.

The closest airport to this church is located in Dharamsala at a distance of 130 km. The Gaggal Airport is well connected to cities such as New Delhi, Chandigarh etc.

c. Religious significance of St John’s Church

The story goes that this Protestant dedicated church which was initially made of wood was renovated using rock structure by a British named John H Pratt in 1863. He raised the money required for construction by convincing the Christian Protestant Missionaries they need to establish a permanent chapel, and thus this is how this beautiful church was eventually established in Dalhousie.
