St Mary’s Church
Considered to be one of the “oldest Syrian churches” in Kerala is the St Mary’s Church. This church dedicated to “Virgin Mary” is located in small village called Kudamaloor in the Kottayam district. This church is old and was constructed during the 11th century by Chempakssari Maharaja. Furthermore, this 400-year-old catholic shrine is known as “Mukthi Ammi”, and comprises of a beautiful painting of Jesus Christ. In addition, situated in close proximity to this church is a memorial honouring “India’s first Christian saint” known as St Alphonsa.

a. Best time to visit St Mary’s Church, Kudamaloor
The ideal time to visit this church is from October to February during the winter season when the climate is extremely “cool” with the mercury dropping to as low as 10 degree Celsius.

c. Religious significance of the St Mary’s Church, Kudamaloor
There is no real religious significance or myth attached to the St Mary’s Church Kudamaloor. The only fact worth mentioning in relation to this church is that, it was built during the 11th century by Chempakasseri Maharaja in honour of Mother Mary and is popularly referred to as “Mukthi Amma”. In addition, in close proximity to this church lies a memorial that is devoted to the “First Christian saint belonging to India” St Alphonsa.
