Swami Samarth Maharaj Temple

A Hindu shrine devoted to a 19th century saint called “Shri Swami Samarth” is located in Maharashtra known as Swami Samarth Maharaj Temple. This pious temple dedicated to the supposed incarnation of “Dattatreya” (i.e. an avatar of the Trimurti) is situated in the Solapur district. This sacred shrine is known for its magnificent architecture, and is surrounded by a banyan tree, a spot where Swami Samarth himself supposedly used to meditate at.  In addition, a myth also states that this banyan tree apparently speaks as certain sounds can be heard.  Furthermore, located in close proximity to this shrine is the “Samadhi” of Swami Samarth.

The ideal time to visit this temple is from October to February as the climate is extremely pleasant with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 30 degree Celsius to a minimum of 18 degree Celsius.

1. By train:

The nearest railway station is located in Solapur at a distance of 400 km.  The Solapur Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country such as Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad etc.

2. By road:

If you intend to drive to this temple then the ideal starting points would be Kolhapur, Mumbai, Pune, and Ratnagiri.

  • Via Kolhapur:

There are three routes from Kolhapur to this temple, and they are via NH204 and Sangola-Mangalwedha-Solapur Road, via NH52, and via Pandhari Nagar Jamakhandi.

  • Via Mumbai:

There is one route from Mumbai to this temple, and it is via Bangalore-Mumbai Highway/Mumbai Highway/Mumbai-Pune Highway and Phule Nagar-Akluj Road.

  • Via Pune:

There are two routes from Pune to this temple, and they are via Pune-Solapur Road/Solapur Pune Highway, and via MH SH 70 and NH65.

  • Via Ratnagiri:

There are three routes from Ratnagiri to this temple, and they are via SH 143, via NH204, and via Kale-Pachwad Road.

3. By air:

The nearest airport is located in Pune. The Lohegaon Airport is well connected to major cities in the country such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi etc.

c. Religious significance of the Swami Samarth Maharaj Temple

According to folklore a saint by the name of Swami Samarth (considered be incarnation of Lord Dattatreya) resided in a town called Akkalkot in Solapur during the 19th century. This saint apparently used to meditate as well as preach to his followers under a banyan tree. It is around this banyan tree that a temple in honour of this saint has been built, and is commonly referred to as “Vatavruksh Mandir”. Furthermore, in close proximity to the main shrine lie the “Samadhi” of this revered saint.
