c. Religious significance:

This city is renowned for a popular and an extremely colourful temple festival called “Thrissur Pooram”. This festival is celebrated every year on the 24th of April. This joyous celebration was introduced by the king i.e. Maharaja of the Cochin Kingdom Sakthan Thampuran. It is at the Vadakkunnathan Temple established by Lord Parsurama that this festival is celebrated with great fanfare. According to the Brahmanda Purana this renowned temple was established when Lord Parsurama requested sea God Varuna for land from the sea as he wanted to meditate. This request was granted and it is on this land gifted by the sea god that this famous temple was founded.
